SunButter Apple Reindeer Snacks

Team SunButter

One way to help kids eat healthy snacks is to get them involved in the process. Hands on activities sure can help kids learn new concepts and values. Fun activities are also very motivating to kids. What better way to help teach the value of healthy snacking than involving the kids in making a fun snack?

It’s the holiday season, and unhealthy snacks can be abundant. But, these adorable reindeer treats are fun and nutritious. An apple peeler corer and slicer was used for this activity, but you can also cut your apple by hand. Kids love turning the handle to core and slice the apple, it’s just so much more fun to eat after using the neat appliance to prepare the snack.

Directions:
1. Place the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl. Reserve 10 chocolate chips to be used for the eyes. Microwave the chocolate chips for 30 seconds, stir, then microwave again for 30 seconds.
2. Lay wax paper on your workspace and use a knife to draw out reindeer antlers. Let dry for 30 minutes.
3. Mix the powdered sugar and water in a bowl. Slowly add more water if needed. With a knife, drop small dots of the powdered sugar frosting onto the wax paper. For more defined dots, place the frosting into a ziplock bag with a small corner cut off. Let the frosting set for 2 minutes, then place chocolate chips upside down into the white circles. Let dry for 30 minutes.
4. Core the apple and slice into rings. Place apple slices on your work space and spread with SunButter. The more SunButter, the merrier! Place cranberries in the center of the apple.

Some ideas to help you get creative with your reindeer: use additional fruits to create more reindeer friends. Add sprinkles for collars. Use mini marshmallows for snowflakes. Have a fun time and create happy holiday memories with your family and SunButter.
