Peanut Free Doggie Treats!

Team SunButter

By Meaghan Grettano

In honor of National Pet Day, my kids and I thought it would be fun to get into the kitchen and experiment with making some wholesome (and peanut butter free!) dog treats for our little pooch!  I mean, what better way to show your dog some love than by making them some homemade treats?

Being a new dog owner, my family and I are quickly learning all about the wide world of buying dog food and treats.  One thing I did know right off the bat was that I would have to watch labels like a hawk; so many varieties of treats contain peanut butter!  Not only that, but many store-bought treats are full of artificial colors and flavors – a huge no-no for the health coach in me!

I made it my mission to come up with a wholesome (and allergy friendly!) doggie treat that the kids and I could make easily at home.  After some trial and error in the kitchen, we arrived at the following recipe our pooch absolutely loves!  The best part is the ingredients are things that most of us already have in our kitchen!

My kids so fondly named these after our dog…

“Bosco’s Bark”

Dog Treat Ingredients Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup dry rolled oats
3/4 cup unsweetened coconut milk*
1 cup SunButter Organic (or whichever variety you prefer)
1 egg
1 tablespoon baking powder

*Any variety of milk or non-dairy substitute could be used here.  We happen to be dairy-free in our house.

Preparation
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  In a large mixing bowl, whisk together SunButter, egg, and milk.  Add in the flours, rolled oats, and baking powder, mixing well to combine.  This will make a stiff dough (I use my hands at the end to really work the oats and flour into the mix).  Form dough into a ball.  Flour a clean work surface.  With a rolling pin, roll out your ball of dough to approximately 1/4 inch thick. Dog Treat CuttersUsing cookie cutters, cut into shapes and place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.  Bake for 20 minutes.  Turn the biscuits over and bake another 15 minutes.  Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving to your furry friend.  Store in an airtight container.
