Why SunButter?

Team SunButter

By Sarah Hoskinson

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Puppy Chow. Peanut Butter Balls. You name it, I love it. I love peanut butter!  It’s been a staple my whole life. But somehow I ended up with two kids (and a niece) who are allergic to peanuts.

After avoiding peanuts for several years, I eventually worked up the courage to eat products with peanuts at work and when I was away from the kids. But I still missed having a peanut butter-like product at home for my kids.

There are several alternatives to peanut butter, but most of them are nut butters which pose a risk for cross-contamination. We were so happy to find SunButter Sunflower Seed Spread to use as an alternative to peanut butter! It is free of peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, egg, dairy, and sesame. SunButter does, however, come in contact with soy during the first step of the manufacturing process. Soy is only present in the roasting facility and on the roasting equipment. This roasting facility is separate from the processing facility where SunButter is actually made, and where no soy is present. The sunflower kernel and the soybeans are never roasted together, and there is a thorough cleanout process after the soybeans are roasted with high pressure, high temperature water to remove any remnants of soy. I have talked to several representatives from SunButter who have all assured me that each tested batch of SunButter, shows no traces of soy. I feel comfortable using SunButter with my family knowing this information. You can read more about SunButter’s Allergen Statement online.

I use SunButter as I would peanut butter. But, be warned, it does not taste like peanut butter. It tastes like…wait for it…sunflower seeds!  I use it on sandwiches, bake with it for added flavor, make chocolate covered SunButter cupssunny chow, and all sorts of goodies. The kids even eat it straight out of the jar!  This stuff is good. SunButter even offers a free recipe book!

sunbutter.comes in a variety of flavors. You can choose from Creamy, Crunch, No-Stir Creamy, No Sugar Added, Natural, and Organic. You can also get On the Go Single Cups which are great for travel, school lunches, or picnics– these cups are available exclusively at Target stores. Our favorites are No-Stir Creamy and No Sugar Added.

My kids can now enjoy having all the treats I loved as a child! I enjoy knowing they are safe, eating such delicious food. The possibilities are endless for what you can make. Find any recipe that calls for peanut butter and simply use SunButter instead! You will be amazed.
