SunButter Bird Feeder Craft

Team SunButter

With spring in full bloom, it’s time to get crafty!  Making a SunButter Bird Feeder is a great way to pass a rainy spring day, recycle an empty SunButter jar, learn about birds and feed your neighborhood’s best singers!  Gather all your used SunButter jars, take a visit to your local bird seed retailer, and it’s time to get started on your very own SunButter Bird Feeder!

Materials
SunButter jar, SunButter (No Stir or Creamy will work best), two sticks or wooden spoons, shelled black sunflower seeds (or bird seed), ribbon or string, scissors, x-acto knife, butter knife, plate, and tape.

Step 1:  Start with a clean, dry SunButter jar. (We recommend cleaning out any leftovers by making overnight oats, then soaking the jar in soapy water.)

Step 2:  Have an adult use an x-acto knife and scissors to cut out two slits on opposing sides of the bottom half of the SunButter jar.  These slits should be large enough to hold one of your sticks or wooden spoons (where the birds will perch) but not so big that the sticks/spoons fall out.

Step 3:  Cut two additional slits on opposite sides for the second stick/spoon.  Be sure to cut the second set of holes slightly above the first two.  This will permit the sticks/spoons to cross over one another inside of the jar.

Step 4:   Pour birdseed onto a plate.  Spread SunButter on the outside of the SunButter jar. Roll the SunButter covered jar in the seeds, completely covering the surface area of the jar.

Step 5:  Push the sticks/spoons into the cut slits.

Step 6:  Tape both ends of a ribbon under the lid of your SunButter jar, creating a secure handle to hang the bird feeder.  Twist the SunButter lid onto the SunButter covered jar.  Double check to be sure that the ribbon holds!

Step 7:  Find a special tree branch from which to hang your SunButter Bird Feeder.

Tip: Hang your SunButter Bird Feeder near a window so you can see all the birds that enjoy your craft and seed!

Below is another SunButter Bird Feeder option.  This version of the craft is great for beginners!

Materials
SunButter jar, ribbon, hot glue, birdseed, and a wooden spoon.

Step 1: Start with a clean, empty SunButter jar.  Click here for tips on getting out the last delicious bits of SunButter!

Step 2: Using hot glue (kids, ask an adult to help!), affix a wooden spoon to the side of you SunButter jar.  Take care to align the bowl of the spoon with the edge of the jar so that, when tipped, the seed will fill the spoon.

Step 3: Tie or glue ribbons around the jar so that it will hang parallel to the ground.

Step 4: Fill your bird feeder with birdseed.  Hang it near a window and enjoy visits from your feathered friends!

Do the birds love SunButter as much as you do?  Can you name what types of birds visit?
